Welcome to Year 5,
What a very unusual start we have had to the beginning of Spring term! It is a shame that we do not get to see your lovely faces in school but we will still be excellent learners from the comfort of our own home.
We shall be holding two Zoom meetings a day (morning session at 9:00am and afternoon session at 1:20pm). Both sessions will be to welcome you all in and see how you are doing. We will also share the learning intention for each lesson with you and go through new skills and consolidate previously learnt skills during this time. We expect you to engage in each of these sessions by asking and answering questions (adhering to our Zoom rules to stay safe).
This term, our challenge question is 'How can we design and produce a game to teach others about Space?'. Please see this term's knowledge organiser to find out more about our afternoon sessions.
Our Class text this term is 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce which is a humorous adventure story about long-legged Liam and his quest to be the first child in Space. This will be our focus in our reading sessions as well as our end-of-day story which the children will hear daily.
In English, we will be developing our creative writing skills by focusing on use of figurative language, sentence lengths and types for effect, how to build tension, how to use dialogue to advance action in a narrative and learning how to use punctuation such as colons and semi-colons for effect. We will be using these skills to write an action scene with a sci-fi twist.
I look forward to another fantastic term with you and can't wait to have you all back in school.
Stay safe.
